October is a beautiful very laid back baby boy. At first glance he is perfection and exemplifies the beauty of a French Bulldog with a big square head and great structure. He does however have a mild midline cleft palate. The only issue a cleft (not repaired) has through the course of a normal life is the restriction to "dry food" and plain water. Dry food they normally swallow whole or almost whole and the plain water is necessary of course and is beneficial in another way (citation). Water up through the cleft "rinses" the nasal passages of anything that may have found its way up through the cleft.  Amazingly after a few drinks of water they get so water up their nose doesn't bother them!

Also note that the majority of cleft pups are healthy, other than the cleft. I have heard over the years the belief that if there is a cleft palate, there are likely other health issues. While I am sure that is the case for some, it is evidently not the case for the majority (citation). All palates will have a "close down" in the center of the cleft, to the point of the palate touching or nearly touching. Those close downs do not happen until after 6-7 months and some not until 10-12 months.

It is estimated that purebred dogs are 20% more likely to have a cleft and bulldogs are 30% more likely (citation) but sadly there is no DNA testing developed yet for cleft palate carriers in French Bulldogs. So why don't you see more of them? Most breeders euthanize them at birth because they require tube feeding for six weeks until they are on solid food. We have decided as breeders to only euthanize when quality of life is low or long-term health is jeopardized. That is not the case with a mild midline cleft palate.

PLEASE NOTE: One year health guarantee is not available for special needs puppies.
